What all is included in a chaat?
A chaat is a combination of veggies, chutneys, masalas or spices, herbs and namkeen toppings or garnishing. The tangy and lip smacking flavours of these chaats makes a person crave for more each time. Chaats make one of the largest categories of Indian street food dishes and the exotic flavours of them are irreplaceable.
Chaat usually has a base of wheat or veggie patty preferably fried for the crispy flavour. It is then covered in a sauce and spices, like a chutney. Most commonly used Indian chutneys include:
1. Mint chutney:
Minty flavours give a cooling touch to this chutney
2. Green chutney:
A blend of fresh herbs like pudina, coriander and green chillies with spices
3. Red chutney:
A spicy blend of chillies and spices served to increase the tangy flavours of
the chaat
4. Tamarind chutney/Saunth:
A sweet and spicy chutney for those with a sweet tooth
After the base is topped with chutney it is further garnished with fresh toppings like chopped fruits or chopped coriander. Some chaats also include a topping or garnish of crushed papdi, a fried wheat disk, and curd. Sprinkle chaat masala over the curd and you have the perfect Indian chaat ready to eat and enjoy.
